Greasy like Sunday morning!

Greasy like Sunday morning!

The weather looked grim on Sunday morning – 10th August – so a summer car run for club members was clearly not going to be blessed with sun and blue skies. Nevertheless a healthy number of club members turned up at Lisburn Golf Club in eager anticipation of a tasty fry to set us up for the day.   We quickly realised that rain had stopped play at the golf club and unfortunately for us the catering staff hadn’t arrived either so there would be no cooked breakfast at the Golf Club. So it was off to the Premier Inn for an all you can eat breakfast. It proved to be a longer breakfast stop than we had anticipated as evidently the hotel could not cope with the volume of people dining there. This did however give time for latecomer Alastair to arrive from Jordanstown and when the fries eventually arrived they were well received (and we weren’t charged for half of them in recognition of the slow service).

Off we set via Carryduff, Comber and Newtownards down the peninsula to Portaferry. The conditions can only be described as challenging with lots of standing water on the roads plenty of heavy showers along the way to test our windscreen wipers.  This did not however deter us and after some spirited but careful driving we arrived in wet and windy Portaferry. After quickly deciding not to take the ferry across to Strangford we all agreed that more coffee was required – the Portaferry hotel duly obliged.

Off we set again around some  of the B roads outside the town and despite the deteriorating weather conditions we all enjoyed the greasy conditions which forced us to keep our wits about us, especially as we navigated our way through some fairly deep puddles en route. Our journey led us to Ballywalter before we decided to head for home rather than complete the trek along the coast road to Bangor.

I took some pictures to prove that unlike the golfers rain can’t stop our play. Thanks to all those who made the effort and made a miserable day an enjoyable one for us all. For those who didn’t venture out and preferred to lie on the sofa in their onesy and watch DVD’s – shame on you – you know who you are !!
