NIIMC at the Tudor Cinema
Instead of our usual club meeting on the 6th of February we decided to have our first film night. Luckily for us, Noel Spence has built his own private cinema just outside Comber. He has successfully recreated the look and feel of a 1950’s picture house. Noel made us feel very welcome and after everyone got their popcorn and drinks we settled down to watch a documentary film that focused on how Ferrari and its drivers approached motorsport in the 1950’s.
The movie really illustrated how dangerous that decade was in relation to motorsport. At every race there was a high risk that someone would be seriously hurt or killed. It was a time where drivers reckoned that it was safer to be thrown clear from the car, rather than stay in it for the accident! The things that modern race drivers take for granted like crash cells and proper safety gear just did not exist. It was very poignant that drivers like Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins did not live to see the next decade.
We would like to thank Noel for his hospitality and also thank club member Ricky Ward for supplying the movie from his collection.
